The Kansas City Chiefs overcame a 14-3 first-half deficit against the upstart Indianapolis Colts to force overtime at Arrowhead Stadium, where Patrick Mahomes engineered a game-winning drive to keep the team’s playoff hopes alive.
After the Chiefs (6-5) forced the Colts (8-3) into a three-and-out on the first series of the extra frame, Mahomes found receiver Rashee Rice for a 21-yard pass to set up an eventual game-winning field goal by Harrison Butker.
Rice had another strong effort since his return from suspension, recording seven catches for 120 yards over the game’s first four quarters before his crucial overtime reception. Most importantly, Rice caught a key two-point conversion in the fourth to set up Butker’s game-tying field goal.
As part of Thursday’s NFL’s Thanksgiving extravaganza, the Chiefs will face the Cowboys in Dallas, where they played as the ‘Texans’ before moving to Kansas City in 1962.
The Colts, meanwhile, will host the current (Houston) Texans next Sunday in Indianapolis.
Mahomes was picked off by Colts defensive end Laiatu Latu and failed to throw a touchdown on Sunday, but nonetheless tossed for 352 yards on 29-of-46 passing while taking four sacks on the day.
He also added another 30 yards on the ground to go with 104 rushing yards from Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who added a touchdown in the win.
Crucially, the Chiefs defense held Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor to just 58 yards on 16 carries.
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce got a rare rushing attempt, scoring a touchdown on a direct snap that was ultimately nullified by a penalty. He also had four catches for 43 yards on offense.
Kansas City coach Andy Reid’s offense helped to limit Indianapolis by winning the possession battle, 42:35 to 25:28.
Penalties, however, were a problem for both teams on Sunday as the Colts were flagged 11 times for 83 yards compared to seven infractions for the Chiefs.
