A top cosmetic surgeon has sparked rumours that pop megastar Taylor Swift has gone under the knife to subtly change the shape of her eyes.
Dr Jonny Betteridge, a London-based aesthetic doctor, shared two images of the singer, before and after the supposed transformation, with his 34,000 Instagram followers.
He suggests that Swift’s subtle change is one example of the growing popularity of blepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelid surgery.
‘This is to help with hooding of the eyes and under eye bags,’ Dr Betteridge says in the clip, before continuing to highlight other popular cosmetic surgery trends of the moment.
The cosmetic procedure, which costs around £6,000, aims to remove excess skin or fat from the upper or lower eyelids — or both.
In older patients, it is used to treat signs of ageing like sagging skin around the eyes and heavy ‘bags’.
Some younger women opt for the procedure to make their eyes appear wider and less hooded.
Dr Betteridge is not the only expert to suggest that the star — who turns 35 this week — has undergone a blepharoplasty, albeit a very subtle one.
Facial plastic surgeon @drspiegel, who is based in Boston in the US, has also highlighted the curious change in Swift’s face.
He told his 37,000 TikTok followers: ‘Now there is a distinct eyelid, where as before her lid was actually touching her eyelashes. This is a sign of a blepharoplasty.’
‘The procedure takes under an hour using dissolving stiches which go away in just a few days or a week,’ he added.
In another video, cosmetic expert @carlytheinjector echoes suspicions of an eye procedure, but is not convinced that she’s undergone a blepharoplasty.
She told her 23,900 followers on TikTok: ‘I think that they did an eyelid crease fixation, which is where they go in and tack back the skin, as opposed to cutting it away and removing it. At that age she likely didn’t have a lot of excess skin.’
However, Dr Nigel Mercer, who specialises in facial reconstruction surgery, believes her facial changes could be the result of normal ageing.
Referring to the before and after images in Dr Betteridge’s Instagram video, he said: ‘It’s not really fair to compare a child’s face to a young woman’s.’
‘In the first image she is in her late teens or early 20s, and her facial structure was just about maturing,’ he told MailOnline.
‘In the second image her features are simply slightly longer, which can happen with age.’
Dr Mercer also explains that a blepharoplasty would not be appropriate for a woman in her mid-thirties — and if it was performed the effects would likely be minimal due to the natural shape of her eye.
He added: ‘A 34-year-old would have very little excess skin to play with and to move that fold upwards you need lots of it.’
‘She would probably only get about two millimeters of extra show.’
Professor Ullas Raghavan, facial cosmetic surgeon at private healthcare clinic Pall Mall Medical, said the Love Story singer’s features have become ‘more refined’ over the years.
He highlighted that facial maturity often brings natural changes, including sharper contours and less baby fat.
‘As someone grows older, their bone structure may appear more defined, especially under the cheekbones and jawline,’ he said.
‘It’s a natural evolution for someone like Taylor, whose features were already well-proportioned,’ he added.
However, rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, rumours have circulated for years.
‘If she’s had any work done, it’s been incredibly subtle,’ Professor Raghavan said
‘Her nose appears slightly more refined now, which could be a result of either a surgical or liquid rhinoplasty or just the effect of ageing and makeup techniques.’
Other speculations include dermal fillers or Botox to maintain her smooth skin and youthful skin.
Professor Raghavan added that these treatments are increasingly common among celebrities.
‘There’s a possibility of subtle filler use in areas like the chin, cheeks or lips, which can enhance fullness without appearing overdone,’ he said.
‘She’s also perhaps had buccal fat removal. But again, these are just possibilities based on observation.’
