Selena Gomez has opened up about the medical challenges that prevent her from having children.
In a candid interview with Vanity Fair, the singer and actress revealed that her health conditions make pregnancy too risky for both her and the baby.
This, she said, has been a source of grief for her.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put both my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while,” the 32-year-old explained.
The report noted that the singer had addressed this issue previously.
In 2017, Gomez disclosed that she had undergone a kidney transplant related to lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes overactive and attacks normal tissue. However, symptoms can be managed with medication.
In 2022, Gomez told Rolling Stone that she may not be able to have a safe pregnancy due to the medication she takes for bipolar disorder, a topic covered in her documentary, My Mind and Me.
In her interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez mentioned that she remains open to the possibility of surrogacy or adoption.
She said, “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen like it does for everyone else. I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.
“It made me really thankful for the other options available for people who are eager to become parents. I’m one of those people.
“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll be a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
Gomez is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco.
