The Kansas City Chiefs moved to 15-1 on the regular season with their Christmas Day victory over the AFC rival Pittsburgh Steelers, which clinched the team the No. 1 seed, home-field advantage all the way to the Super Bowl and the conference’s sole bye through Super Wild Card Weekend.
However, for star tight end Travis Kelce, the day/victory was even bigger than that. Kelce passed former Chiefs tight end and Hall of Fame player Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown receptions in franchise history.
Kelce spoke about that accomplishment during the Netflix postgame interview, which was conducted on the field alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
“It’s everything to me. Tony has been a mentor to me. He’s been right there for me any questions I’ve ever had,” Kelce said “I feel like I’m still trying to fill that guy’s shoes.
He’s such an unbelievable competitor, and I got so much love for him, and it’s just an honor to be in [those] conversations with him.” That wasn’t the only milestone Kelce hit on Wednesday, Dec. 25.
He also recorded his 1,000th career catch across a 12-year NFL career. Earlier this season, Kelce became the first player in league history — including wide receivers — to record at least 90 receptions in seven consecutive campaigns.
Kelce is also a nine-time consecutive Pro Bowler, with a chance to make it 10 in a row this season, and earned All-Pro honors (First-Team or Second-Team) in seven straight years between 2016-22.
All of that is to say that when Kelce’s career is finished, the two-time Super Bowl-winning tight end is a lock to follow Gonzalez into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
