Cynthia Erivo spoke about her strong physical connection with Wicked co-star Ariana Grande, and how they often communicate through touch.
The actress, 37, shared about her and Grande’s, 31, bond in a teaser clip for her upcoming appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, set to air on December 10.
Speaking of their connection, she said: ‘I think I’m sort of used to it now. If it’s not like connected, I’m like, what’s wrong? What’s happening? Where are you? You know what I mean?’
‘We always end up… we walk hand-in-hand very often. Like, if we’re not walking hand-in-hand, we’ll find each other somewhere,’ she added.
After Drew — who was recently pushed away by Martha Stewart for getting too close mid-interview — spoke about not being able to hold back from ‘holding hands, hugging, snuggling,’ Cynthia said that many people are ‘a bit afraid of physical connection.’
‘I think we assume that physical connection can only be romantic,’ she said.
She continued: ‘I think we don’t realize that how we communicate sometimes is by physical touch.’
‘Like sometimes you can’t say anything and you’re in a room and you’re like, I just that it’s just like a squeeze of hand and that’s sometimes how she and I communicate, we might be talking to someone or I might need to, like, communicate something to her.’
And I’m, it’s just a squeeze of the hand or just like a pinch of a finger, you know, or a hug. It just, you know, whatever we, however we need to communicate, it is how we need to communicate.’
‘And I think we don’t give enough credit to how we communicate with our friends physically.’
Ariana and Cynthia have been turning heads for weeks after a series of bizarre interviews during the Wicked press tour – and recently yet another cringeworthy moment has caught fans’ attention.
In another bizarre clip, which went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter, Cynthia broke down in tears over wearing her character Elphaba’s green makeup on set.
The two women sat down with a reporter for Pink News last week to promote their highly-anticipated movie adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical.
During the interview, Cynthia appeared visually emotional as she explained that removing the green makeup everyday made her feel more comfortable in her own appearance.
The clip showed Ariana, who also appeared emotional over the comment, clutching Cynthia’s hand and breathlessly praising her beauty.
Film fans had a lot to say about the clip, with some joking the interview looked like ‘an emotional support group’, while others said the uncomfortable press tour has turned them off going to see the movie.
Cynthia said: ‘I am a person and I feel, and I have feelings, and I can share them.’ Ariana interjected saying: ‘And if you need to cry right now, you cry.’
The actor continued: ‘Someone said to me once that the green was what I loved the most about Elphaba and I would want to stay green, but actually being green, yes, I loved playing this character but every time I took the makeup off I loved who I was even more.
Through tears she added: ‘So I have come away feeling really beautiful.’ Ariana added: ‘You f***ing are! Holy sh**, you know?’
At the end of the clip the reporter explained it was her first junket and the pair praised her efforts.
Ariana said: ‘Well you have been the light of the day, you have been a gift.’ Cynthia added: ‘You brought such light into the room, thank you very much for coming into this room today, we needed you to come in.’
Taking to social media, movie fans claimed the awkward interaction turned them off seeing the flick in the cinema.
One person wrote: ‘I’m old enough to remember when press junkets made you want to go see the film.
Another added: ‘I’m so turned off by the advertising of this film. I refuse to see it.’
Another said: ‘Wow….I’m going to not watch this even more than I was planning on not watching it.’
Someone else added: ‘You’d think these two idiots had just worked out a cure for cancer.’
Ariana and Cynthia have been traveling the globe together over the last few weeks to promote their roles in the long-awaited flick, which hit theaters on Friday, November 22.
They have participated in a slew of interviews and red carpet events in the lead-up to the film’s release, but have continuously faced scrutiny over their behavior throughout the press.
In particular, many social media users have commented on the fact that the women often break down in tears while discussing the movie.
During an appearance on the Heart Breakfast show this week, Cynthia explained why they often become emotional.
‘Every interview I’ve read of you and Ariana, it just says that you end up in tears all the time,’ host Amanda Holden said to Cynthia.
‘We do. And I think it’s because people have come in with such energy and they come in, their responses, their emotional responses come into the room with us, it’s the first time we’ve been able to talk about it, so we’re both reliving and rehashing all the things we’ve been through and the journey we’ve been on,’ Cynthia responded.
‘We can’t help it, we get very emotional about it.’
