MAJOR BREAKING: U.S. Senate officially passes a resolution to block President Trump from taking further military action in Venezuela without congressional approval.
In a rare bipartisan rebuke to President Donald Trump, the U.S. Senate officially passed a War Powers Resolution on Thursday, blocking further military action in or against Venezuela without explicit congressional approval.
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and supported by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), passed 52-47.
Five Republicans — including Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Todd Young (Indiana), and Josh Hawley (Missouri) — joined all Democrats in favor.
The resolution requires President Trump to terminate U.S. armed forces from hostilities in Venezuela unless authorized by Congress or in cases of imminent threat.
It follows Trump’s recent unilateral raid that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, which critics called an illegal act of war.
President Trump criticized the vote, calling defecting Republicans “disloyal” and vowing to continue operations.
The resolution now heads to the House, where passage is uncertain, and faces a likely presidential veto.
Supporters argue it reaffirms Congress’s constitutional authority over war declarations, while opponents view it as undermining executive power during ongoing operations.
