Tragedy struck the Hudson River yesterday afternoon as a private helicopter crashed into the water, claiming the lives of six people. Authorities have now identified the victims — and heartbreakingly, it has been confirmed that half of them were children.
The helicopter, a twin-engine Bell 429 operated by a private charter company, was on a sightseeing tour when it suddenly lost power and plunged into the river just north of the Manhattan skyline.
Despite immediate rescue efforts by NYPD and FDNY units, there were no survivors.
Today, in an emotional statement posted on her Instagram, global superstar Rihanna revealed that one of the young victims was personally connected to her.
“I am devastated to share that my goddaughter, Amara Lewis, was among the beautiful souls we lost yesterday,” Rihanna wrote. “She was only 9 years old, full of life, dreams, and laughter. My heart is broken for her family and for all the families affected.”
Authorities confirmed that three of the six victims were children between the ages of 8 and 12, all traveling with their parents as part of a birthday celebration.
The names of all the victims are being withheld pending full family notifications.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the helicopter spun erratically before crashing into the water.
“It was horrifying,” said Mark Delaney, a ferry captain who witnessed the incident.
“We tried to reach them as fast as we could, but the helicopter sank so quickly.”
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash.
Early reports suggest mechanical failure may have played a role, but investigators stress that it is too early to determine the exact cause.
The helicopter’s black box, which records flight data, has been recovered and will be analyzed over the coming weeks.
The company operating the tour has suspended all flights pending the outcome of the investigation.
As the city mourns, tributes and condolences have poured in from around the world, with many celebrities, politicians, and community leaders expressing their grief.
A candlelight vigil is planned for this evening at Pier 62 in Manhattan, where the helicopter was scheduled to return.
Mayor Eric Adams issued a statement late Monday, calling the crash “an unimaginable tragedy that has touched every New Yorker’s heart.”
“We stand with the families during this devastating time,” Adams said. “We will do everything in our power to ensure a full and transparent investigation.”
For now, the city grieves — and the loss of so many young lives has made the heartbreak even deeper.
